A Farewell to Janusz Kubicki

Now that we are alone we can talk prince man to man
though you lie on the stairs and see nothing more than a dead ant
nothing but black sun with broken rays
Never could I think of your hands without a smile
and now when they lie on the stone like fallen nests
they are as vulnerable as before This is just the end
The hands lie separately The sword lies separately Separately the head
and the knight’s feet in soft slippers
(Zbigniew Herbert, “Elegy of Fortynbras” – fragment)

On 1 December, 2014 in Doły Cemetery in Łódź a funeral of Janusz Kubicki took place.

He did not want speeches or a pompous ceremony. One of the most important Polish actors was bidden farewell by his family, director Ewa Pilawska, actors and employees of Powszechny Theatre and his former colleagues from Nowy Theatre in Łódź – two institutions Janusz Kubicki was connected with for all his professional career. Members of Powszechny Theatre lit 57 candles on his graves – symbolizing 57 theatrical seasons of Janusz Kubicki.

Damian Kulec, the youngest member of Powszechny Theatre team, bade farewell to the deceased by reading “Elegy of Fortynbras” by Zbigniew Herbert. We all honoured Janusz Kubicki by giving him applause because – as it was stated by director Ewa Pilawska – it is the only way of saying “thank you” to the actor.

Janusz Kubicki died on 26 November. He was faithful to Łódź for all his professional career. He died, leaving his wife, a famous actress Alicja Zommer and his son, stage designer Maciej Kubicki.

He made his debut as an actor in „Ciemności kryją ziemię” by Jerzy Andrzejewski as Mateo Dara – the play was directed by Kazimierz Dejmek in Nowy Theatre in Łódź. The audience adored him for his role of Professor Higgins in „My Fair Lady”. He created many unforgettable roles in plays directed by Kazimierz Dejmek, Janusz Kłosiński, Jerzy Antczak, Bohdan Korzeniewski, Roman Sykała, Józef Gruda, Edward Dziewoński, Agnieszka Glińska, Waldemar Śmigasiewicz and Jacek Głomb. He played many great roles in film and in TV Theatre. Recently he was one of the heroes of our series „Masters of Łódź Theatres” presenting outstanding creators of Łódź theatres. On 4 December he was to start rehearsing for the role in „Song Factory” directed by Maciej Wojtyszko.

For his services to culture promotion he was decorated with Gold Cross of Merit, Badge of Distinguished Culture Activist and Honorary Badge of the City of Łódź. He also received an Award granted by governor of the Łódź province.

We lost a wonderful colleague, friend and outstanding artist.
