Claude Bardouil and „The Exhausted” at the Festival

„The Exhausted” produced by New Theatre from Warsaw was shown on 29 March on the Small Stage of Powszechny Theatre during the 21st edition of International Festival of Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant. The play was directed by Claude Bardouil – a director, dancer, actor and choreographer; he was voted the best actor of the 19th edition of the Festival for his role in „Nancy. Inteview”. This was the last spectacle of the Festival that takes part in the Audience Plebiscite.

„The body is a great utopian actor covered with mask, make-up, tattoos. Mask, make-up and tattoos do not mean that we have a different body. This is something different. Thanks to them the body connects with secret, invisible powers. […] The body becomes a piece of imagined space and communicates with the world of deities and the world of other people” – this is what Michel Foucault said in 1966 in Radio France Culture. „The Exhausted” is a metaphor of being confined to a body. Incarnation of thoughts about the body. Shannon Michelle Wilsey, known under the artistic pseudonym Savannah, was the inspiration for the play. She was an American who became one of the most popular porn actresses. After her suicidal death she goes to the Paradise where she meets Marlene Dietrich. This is the meeting of two erotic icons and its energy is expressed through a dance. The body is expressing emotions with very suggestive moves and convulsions and it is only a metaphor of what is non-physical. In a trans dance the exhausted do not use vulgar, erotic language. The body language is the expresion of the sense of exhaustion.

Łukasz Drewniak moderated the meeting with the creators that followed the spectacle. The actors told about their work with Claude Bardouil and they noticed that according to his conception of choreography and stage movement you need to break up with a technique and „knowledge” of dance. Instead you need a new knowledge of your own body in order to be able to articulate with a move everything what you normally articulate with words. Claude Bardouil said that „The Exhausted” is a kind of performance – although it is regularly shown on stage every time it has something new, something unique. He also said that actors of New Theatre do not play the characters but they play themselves. In spite of distinct stylizations it is authenticity and expression of individual personal emotions that matter.

Thank you for your presence. We would like to remind you of the Audience Plebiscite and ask you to vote for the best actor, best actress and best performance.
