„False Dmitri” from Legnica

The spectators of the 22nd edition of International Festival of Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant could watch „False Dmitri”. The spectacle was directed by Jacek Głomb.

The play was produced by Modjeska Theatre in Legnica. It is based on the drama by Adolf Nowaczyński, one of the most controversial figures of the interwar decades. It tells a story of an episode in 1605 when the False Dimitri won the tsar’s throne – it was due to the help of Polish noblemen who were seeking for influence and profits. The succession ended with an international scandal and bloodshed. The Poles conquering the Kremlin, intrigues and the collision of two radically different worlds of East and West, Polish-Russian rapprochements and antagonisms – it all makes an original story that combines the tense of a political thriller and a painful relevance.

The meeting with the play’s creators was moderated by Łukasz Drewniak. Director Jacek Głomb said that he had looked, together with Robert Urbański, for an old Polish drama which had not been very well-known in order to produce it for a contemporary spectator. It was also very important not to interfere in the original text by Adolf Nowaczyński. The actors told about rehearsals when the most difficult problem was the original language of the play – a mixture of Polish and Russian made up by Nowaczyński. But as the spectators noticed the new language correlates with the stage production and it is so evocative that it helps to intensify the show’s power of expression.

Thank you for being with us!
