„Forefathers’ Eve” – the spectacle and meeting with its creators

On 13 March we began a weekend theatre marathon during the 21st edition of International Festival of Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant. It started in Wytwórnia Club with „Forefathers’ Eve” produced by the New Theatre in Poznań and directed by Radosław Rychcik. The house more more than full.

Many pieces from „Forefathers’ Eve” by the Great Poet Adam Mickiewicz, so deeply rooted in Polish culture, live their own independent lives. The spectacle directed by Radosław Rychick goes a little further. He puts the drama in a modern social and pop culture context and creates a collage of the 19the century literature, films, facts, popular figures, movie stars. Marilyn Monroe, Ku Klux Klan, „The Shining”, president J. F. Kennedy and Marthin Luther King – all become the heroes of the drama. They are present equivalents of the „Forefather’s Eve” heroes. They broaden their nature, influence and significance. They use the Great Poet’s language but their language has a quite different expression. It is not about Poland but about freedom, equality, right to happiness.

After the performance Witold Mrozek moderated the meeting with its creators and director Piotr Kruszyński of the New Theatre in Poznań. The director told about making of the spectacle that was meant to be brave and in contrast with the canon. During the discussion the participants noticed that a new interpretation of the drama was needed and that the spectacle discovered important aspects of „Forefathers’ Eve”.
