Long standing ovation for „Kordian”

Technical limitations were not a problem for us while presenting “Kordian” at the 22nd edition of International Festival of Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant. On 9 April all theatre and Festival fans saw “Kordian” in National (Narodowy) Theatre in Warsaw – the play directed by Jan Englert which was specially produced for the 25oth anniversary of Polish national theatre.

At the press conference before the trip to Warsaw Ewa Pilawska, the Festival’s artistic director, thanked Jan Englert who accepted the suggestion of presenting the spectacle at the Festival. She emphasized that all Festival’s editions (now one of the most important theatre festivals in Poland) are created with Lodz, its inhabitants and local elites in mind. A trip to Warsaw was the result of technical limitations because no local theatre was able to produce “Kordian” in Lodz. – The Lodz Aglomeration Rail accepted the challenged and organized a special festival train. Many thanks to Andrzej Wasilewski, the president of Lodz Aglomeration Rail – thanks to him we can go to National Theatre in Warsaw on a comfortable train – said Ewa Pilawska.

There were about 340 people on board the train – price of the trip was included in the theatre ticket price. The play was given a long standing ovation by the audience in the Wojciech Bogusławski Hall of the theatre. After the show there was a meeting with Jan Englert and the actors; the meeting was moderated by Łukasz Drewniak.

Jan Englert says that “Kordian”: “stages Polish hell and Polish heaven. <<Preparation>>, an opening scene of <<Kordian>>, gives the play a metaphysical brace and, in addition, almost in a cabaret form. (…) I feel that while participating in our reality I just take part in a cabaret. The cabaret that is more absurd than tragic. Słowacki’s drama read through the absurd seems to be very contemporary to me”, says the director.

The spectacle, the meeting, the trip – all were exceptional. Thank you very much! The Festival goes on, we invite you to next events!
