New season, new address – Big Stage moves to Bałtyk cinema

In a couple of days modernization of Theatre Powszechny's Big Stage begins. However, during the renovation period we will not stop playing – our Big Stage moves to a former Bałtyk cinema building at 20 Narutowicza Street.

- This modernization has really been necessary – Ewa Pilawska, director of Powszechny Theatre in Łódź says. - Its programme is very large but when the works are finished in two years' time we will have one of the most modern and high-tech stages in Poland.

Ewa Pilawska emphasizes that the Theatre's relocation is possible due to goodwill, understanding and help of Mr Witold Stępień – the Łódz Province Marshal, Ms Hanna Zdanowska – Mayor of the City of Łódz and the province councilors. - I am glad that the city will not lose a theatre stage, that the Powszechny Theatre spectators can stay with us and that the actors do not have to worry about their jobs. On our temporary Big Stage our spectators will see all our productions, there will be previews, too.

For the whole modernization period our Small Stage will be open at our permanent address – 21 Legionów Street.

Of course it is necessary to adapt the cinema to our needs. We have already found a sponsor who will participate in the costs. The works will start soon because we want to open our new stage after summer holidays. - We plan an official inauguration in the second half of September and it will be connected with a surprise for the inhabitants of Łódz – Ewa Pilawska says.

- Former Bałtyk cinema is a fantastic address. For me it is magic place and I like it very much – Powszechny Theatre director says. - I have seen many great films there, I have had many touching emotions connected with them. I am sure that Melpomene will feel fine at the new „film” address but the most important thing for me is the fact that this address will not disappear from the cultural map of Łódz.

Powszechny Theatre modernization will be financed from the European Union funds ( The Łódź Province Regional Operating Programme in 2014-2020) as well as by the City of Łódź. The modernization costs are 20 million zloties.
