„My Dad’s a Birdman” – preview on the Small Stage

On Sunday, 15 June, on the Small Stage we saw a preview of the tale „My Dad’s a Birdman”. The play attracted more than a full house – the house was very special because there were children from the unemployed families there.

„My Dad’s a Birdman” is another part of the educational action of Powszechny Theatre called „Child in a situation” which was opened last June with a play „Mr A’s Amazing Maze Place” addressed to the young audience. The aim of the action is to point out a difficult situation of children facing important challenges in their lives. This is for them that Powszechny Theatre have organized various events, Christmas for the youngest or Children’s day among others (all in the Theatre seat). We think that theatre means mission and that is why all June performances of the tale are addressed to charges of city and regional welfare centres.

David Almond’s play is a warm and funny story not about important goal we have in our lives but about our loved ones we would like to have with us while pursuing this goal. About people who believe in us as much as we believe in our dreams. The story shows that friendship is something most important and exceptional in life. At the same time „My Dad’s a Birdman” presents a problem of a child who has to face one of the parents’ depression.

After the show the children released ballons with their wishes and dreams, they were also given some sweets from the Dybalski bakery.

Later youg theatre guests took part in plastic art workshops run by professional visual artists. The children learned of flying machines, balloons and winged horses, they were told about the myth of Daedelus and Icarus. Finally, using colour paper, ribbons, paints and feathers they prepared works connected with the spectacle. The workshops’ participants were given books – presents from Gandalf bookshop.
