Powszechny for the thousandth time

It will be on 1 October at 7 p.m. when we play „Shear Madness” by Paul Portner for the thousandth time! The first preview of the play took place in March 1999. „Nobody believed it would be a success. I had been told it would be <<a spectacular disaster>>. And it appeared that more than 400 thousand people in Łódź came to our theatre to see the play. The house has always been more than full. Many Polish theatres have followed our example”, says Ewa Pilawska, the Powszechny Theatre director. It was her idea to show „Shear Madness” in Poland.

The spectacle on 1 October will be exceptional not only because of the jubilee. Everybody can buy tickets for a symbolic 1 zloty apiece. The tickets will go on sale on Saturday, 17 September, at 1 p.m. Everybody can buy two tickets (sorry, there is no booking in advance).

„Shear Madness” has its place in the Guinness Book of World Records – it has been the longest running nonmusical play in the history of American theatre. It had its first Polish preview 17 years ago in Powszechny Theatre in Łódź. „Since it appeared to be a huge success it has been produced in many Polish theatres. It is my satisfaction that the risk I took more than 17 years ago has paid off and that we discovered this theatrical phenomenen for Polish theatre”, Ms. Pilawska says.
