Rehearsals of „Song Factory”

In Powszechny Theatre we have just started rehearsals of „Song Factory” – a play by Maciej Wojtyszko and Maciej Karpiński.

During WWII Łódź was not destroyed. The city not far away from Warsaw became then Poland’s temporary capital. It also became the capital of Polish movie industry and it hold the title for many years. During the third meeting of the series „Masters of Łódź Theatres” Michał Szewczyk – senior actor of Powszechny Theatre – called Łódź „the film Mecca and Medina”. Several movies were made here each year, the first Polish colour movie („Przygoda na Mariensztacie”) was produced here. Altogether hundreds of films and TV series were made in Łódź.

The scene of „Song Factory” is laid in Łódź. The play’s heroes – Leonard Buczkowski and Ludwik Starski – are looking for songs (both notes and lyrics) that were sung during the Nazi occupation because they are producing the first Polish post-WWII movie „Zakazane piosenki” („Forbidden songs”). In Powszechny Theatre you will see a comedy about love, history, film city of Łódź and recollections of Warsaw during the war. Oscar winner Allan Starski (son of Ludwik Starski) is the author of set design, music is composed by Jerzy Satanowski.

The premiere of the play is scheduled during the XXI International Festival of Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant. The play will be one of the most important events of a jubilee season for Powszechny Theatre for next year we will be celebrating our 70th anniversary.
