„Tango Łódź” – a spectacle for women textile-workers
On 23 May at 7.15 pm Powszechny Theatre in Łódź will present “Tango Łódź” specially for Łódź women textile-workers. This day former workers of the city textile factories will be able to buy a ticket for a symbolic 1 zloty.
The play was specially written for the 22nd edition of International Festival of Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant. It was inspired by the works of Witold Wandurski the creator of the pre-war Robotniczy (Workers’) Theatre in Łódź and especially by a proletarian nativity play started by him. This theatrical journey starts with the 1905 revolution, reminding us of the then literature, and ends with a huge question mark concerning the future of Łódź factories. We travel through time with the history of the 20th century Łódź, the city’s important events and changes, wondering where the losers and the winners of the strikes and the revolution are now. And finally, is the history of the 20th century’s industry in Łódź a linear development or a spiral of constantly recurring themes and problems?
