„The Dresser” from Narodowy Theatre in Warsaw – at the 23rd Festival

For two days – Monday 20 March and Tuesday 21 March – Narodowy Theatre from Warsaw presented at the 23rd Festival “The Dresser” directed by Adam Sajnuk. In those two days the house was more than full, there were long standing ovations after each performance.

“The Dresser” is a play about the strength and elusiveness of the theatre. It is a story of the creative process, about the strength of the actor’s transformation and ultimately about the risk of loneliness and reverse of an artist. We look behind the scenes. Shakespeare's “King Lear” is on the poster. The head of a theatre troupe, “Sir” for the colleagues (played by Jan Englert), will play the title role for the 227th time. But he is becoming weaker and weaker. Behind the scenes he is accompanied by the dresser – Norman (played by Janusz Gajos).

On Monday after the spectacle there was a meeting with its creators. It was moderated by Łukasz Drewniak. The meeting gave the opportunity to talk about the passing theatre. As Jan Englert said, the modern theatre (and generally – culture) abuses the word “artist”. He pointed out that in the past you could find a very few artist among a thousand craftsmen. Today it is the other way round. Now it is also difficult to find enough time to work solidly on a spectacle (or it is a deliberate resignation). Janusz Gajos talked about changes in the theatre that were connected with the change of relations within the theatre troups. - Now we only have groups of actors that draw around their master – director just for a while, for the time that is needed for the work on another spectacle – Gajos said.

Thank you for that night!
