Artist in a crisis

Do we witness crisis in art?

Or maybe we abuse the word “crisis”?

Is the pandemic a new crisis? Is it a crisis or a general change in approaching art which, due to the pandemic,  happened double-quick?

Is it the artists’ crisis or the crisis of reality in which artists function?

Or maybe it is the crisis of institutions?

Does the crisis concern the art receivers? Have we stopped to want to do anything? Are we still ready to accept challenges of being confronted with works of art? Is the need of being in touch with art still authentic?

In what way the pandemic has touched the art creators? What is a difference between the pandemic crisis and the previous ones? Is it more dangerous? Are we more helpless because of it?

Independence and freedom have been the artist’s realm and in the theatre it is a spectator who is the artist’s partner. What reflections appeared when the houses were shut down, when the artists and the audience had to move out to the net? Is an artist free and independent when he has no audience? Can a modern artist be free and independent at all? What influence has a spectator upon him? To which extent is an artist dependent on his spectator?

Is art a part of economy and the artists just generate Gross Domestic Product? And if so, have the artists received governmental support during the pandemic just as other parts of the economy have? Has a sudden stop caused by the pandemic been reflected in any help and in introducing law solutions? Will the inevitability of economic categories (stressed by the pandemic) change the sense of cultivating art and supporting it? Were the artists lonely during the pandemic? Who was responsible for the artists then?

Is not it a paradox that art helps us live through most difficult times and at the same time it is an “added value” we give up in the first place when necessity comes? What is a relation between the society and an artist? What is a relation between a receiver and a creator? Is art the field we are all responsible for? Was it only the pandemic that showed us how much we needed artists and art? Or maybe the pandemic has made us realized we do not care for art?

I invite you to participate in the discussion
