„Blood Type” at the 32nd Festival!

Does our background matter? How much do we really know about our grandfathers and grandmothers? On Friday, 17 April 2026, we saw „Blood Type” – the play by Anna Wakulik, directed by Wojciech Urbański. Thank you and thank Ateneum Theatre in Warsaw for that festival night! Tonight the second presentation of the spectacle, on Tuesday another festival performances. See you at the Theatre!

- „Blood Type” in a subversive way raises the question of what we inherit in the non-material dimension – what wrongs and secrets we inherit from past generations. Do we still consider those with blue blood flowing in their veins to be better? The performance brilliantly demonstrates that we are more alike than we realize – Ewa Pilawska, artistic director of the Festival, notices.

After the spectacle there was a meeting with its creators. Artur Tyszkiewicz, director of  The Stefan Jaracz Ateneum Theatre said that in his opinion the mission of public theatre was to promote and stage Polish plays, particularly Polish contemporary plays and this was one of the reasons he had decided to premiere the play by Anna Wakulik. The director of the play and the actors told about how they had been building the spectacle which joined two worlds – a real situation of the meeting of four persons with  almost magical realism, where the past and the experiences of previous generations are evoked through white voice singing. The creators spoke also about the process that the performance triggered in them and in the audience – the process of reflecting on our past and whether we could truly say we always knew exactly who our ancestors had been... „Blood Type” also serves as an homage to women, emphasizing how social divisions strongly shape the lives of successive generations.
