Preview of "Seventeen" in the "Child in a situation" project
On 7 June on our Small Stage we presented the spectacle „Seventeen” by Matthew Whittet directed by Ewa Pilawska and Andrzej Jakubas. The play is aimed mainly at younger viewers. It is the 7th spectacle within the “Child in a situation” project which consists of plays and workshops where young people problems are discussed in a modern language.
„Seventeen” by an Australian playwright Matthew Whittet was translated specially for Powszechny Theatre by Elżbieta Woźniak. She is a translator of many English language plays that have been presented at Polish theatres. Whittet’s „Seventeen” is set on an evening in a park at dusk. It tells a story of a group of teenagers who meet on the very last day of school. They are just about to start a new stage of their lives, to start their first plans. The meeting is an opportunity to bring back memories but also to reveal secrets that have been deeply hidden so far, to show their uncertainty, doubts, fears. Each character has a problem he or she did not want to or could not talk about. Whittet’s play is a story about loneliness in a group, about power of friendship and feelings, sense of telling the truth, about discovering your own identity and sexuality and a need for being accepted.
After the “Child in a situation” spectacles we invite the viewers to the workshops about the problems that were presented in the plays. They are run by an actor together with psychologists, philosophers, sexual educators – the list of experts depends on the subject of the spectacle. After “Seventeen” our guests at the workshop talked about the process of becoming grown-up. The workshops will take place after each spectacle. Thank you for being with us!
