Diana Meheik’s “The Rose of Jericho” is a drama based on the true story of Olena Popik. This twenty-one-year-old Ukrainian prostitute was used by human traffickers for years and died in Mostar as a result of the devastation caused by venereal diseases.
The play asks a fundamental question: how much is our life worth if we are deprived of our own body, thoughts, names and language? Pulled out from her own environment, Olena, with a new name given by her owner – Amala, faces the world as an eternal alien, without a home in a geographical and metaphorical sense.
