"The Wedding" to inaugurate the 24th International Festival of Plays Pleasant and Upleasant

We inaugurated the 24th edition of the Festival with “The Wedding” By Stanisław Wyspiański, directed by Jan Klata. As usual there were crowds of spectactors who were sitting everywhere, not only in the auditorium but on the stairs, on the floor… And the atmosphere was very energetic. We had distinguished guest from Łódź, Poland and abroad.  Multigeneration troup of National Stary Theatre from Kraków proved that the Wyspiański’s play was universal because it told about problems  that touched everybody regardless of current historic and political context. At the same time the spectacle produced a true feeling of union between the actors and the audience. Thank you for this evening and night (we finished at 1 a.m.). Such events will long be remembered.

But first there was a vernissage of the exhibition “It is dangerous to quit the stage”. The exhibition is the original interpretation of the Festival’s theme and its curator, Ewa Bloom-Kwiatkowska, invited young artists to take part. The exhibition will stay in Powszechny Theatre for a couple of months.

And after “The Wedding” there was a meeting with its creators which was moderated by Łukasz Maciejewski. Both the director and the actors stressed the spectacle was very important as it made it possible for many generations of actors to meet and share their experiences and sensitivity. Anna Dymna, Elżbieta Karkoszka, Mieczysław Grąbka and Jan Peszek recalled previous stagings of “The Wedding” in Stary Theatre in which they had played. The creators emphasized a special aspect of “Wyspiański’s drama because it always referred to reality. They also noticed that in recent years in National Stary Theatre in Kraków a team came into being which was not hierarchical but it worked on the basis of mutual and group activities while preparing new spectacles.

We invite you to have a look at the photographs taken during the Festival’s inauguration.
