Dance of the Albatross

„Dance of the Albatross” („La danse de l’albatros”)
by Gérald Sibleyras

Filip – a middle aged man, an authority on animals and a confirmed bachelor – invites his sister Klara and Ludwik, a friend of his, to his newly bought house in the country. The house is supposed to be an asylum for Filip and his much younger woman. They are to spend a weekend in the country and have a nice time there. But soon it appears to become a complicated introduction to funny and at the same time bitter adventures of the heroes. Filip, Klara and Ludwik at all costs try to stop time and prove themselves they are still young and may start everything from the very beginning. They take part in peace demonstrations, they read articles about healthy lifestyle, but deep inside they are afraid of loneliness, of getting old, of admitting that life has been slipping through their fingers. And they dream of having at least one „dance of the albatross”.

„Dance of the Albatross” is a warm comedy written by Gèrald Sibleyras, one of the most interesting contemporary French playwrights. In a perfect way it pictures a modern society. Sibleyras proves to be a careful and acute observer who can diagnose our anxieties, our frustrations and vices. He describes them with a great sense of humour and understanding what makes us enjoy ourselves and find a piece of us on the stage at the same time.
