John Retallack, a British playwright and director, is famous for touching problems that are generally thought of as a taboo or problems that plays for young people often fail to mention. He is the author of several plays for young viewers and has adapted numerous texts for stage. His adaptation of Melvin Burgess's „Junk” won the prestigious TMA Young People's Award.

In his plays John Retallack touches problems that are very important for young people. He opens discussion on subjects that young people do not often know how to talk about or they look for the answers in unreliable sources. The subject of „Virgins” by Retallack is sex. Is it really a taboo subject? Is it possible to talk about it with no constraints of being vulgar or a hypocrite? Is it easier for us to talk about it than it was for our grandparents or grandgrandparents? And finally, is it true that young people nowadays are more open and airy and they treat sex only as a kind of play or joy?

John Retallack is not a teacher when he speaks about sex, about feelings accompanying it, about risks, about how important it is in everybody's life. He does not try to teach us. He asks how to understand your sexuality and experience it while living together with your parents and also how to keep your closeness in everyday busy life. It is a story about a family who have lost themselves and cannot communicate with each other any more.
