“Capri – Refugees’ Island” – master presentation at the 26th Festival

On Wednesday and Thursday (19 and 20 February) we presented “Capri – Regugees’ Island”, directed by Krystian Lupa and produced by the Zygmunt Hübner Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw. Thank you for those two exceptional spectacles and for enthusiastic reception. We invite you to have a look at the photos taken at Wednesday night at Big Stage of Powszechny Theatre.

In “Capri – Refugees’ Island” Krystian Lupa presents his six-hour-long vision of an endless trap we, people, have been fallen into. Since the beginning of the world, since the first scene where woman gives man an apple. We have taken part in an self-critical, ironic introspection which goes beyond the storyline. It is a monumental prosecution speech about violence inside us. We hate each other, we humiliate each other, there are more and more victims, everyday we distort others – and that is why we have become repulsive caricatures ourselves. Human cruelty virus is sometimes sleeping but it never dies. Sometimes it wakes up and drives us to tortures and humiliation. Our violence is creeping somewhere between subtlety and vulgarity, a cruel war and daily life which can be even more cruel. We build systems and then we fall their victims. We are victims and soon we become executioners. We can be everybody and do everything – just like Malaparte was nobody while being everybody. We want to believe in everything but there is something stronger than our faith – it is a need to believe that we are still able to believe at all. Capri is a symbol of escape, a place of catharsis and solitude. Is it real or false? Is the escape still possible? Is it a solution?
