„The Art of Intonation” at the Festival

On Saturday and Sunday (11 and 12 March, 2023) at the 29th edition of International Festival of Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant we saw „The Art of Intonation” by Tadeusz Słobodzianek, directed by Anna Wieczur. Thank you for the mutual reflection about theatre and for such an enthusiastic reception!

The spectacle tells about three outstanding theatre creators and reformers – Yuri Zavadsky, Jerzy Grotowski, Tadeusz Kantor and Ludwik Flaszen. We listen to their conversations on art which mix with the prosaic aspects of life. We witness the formation of ideas, fervent search, revaluation in thinking about theatre and at the same time we watch weak and imperfect people who seek refuge in art. We dive into a magic world of theatre keeping in mind that „The Art of Intonation” is self-mocking.  The spectacle is a confession of faith in art but it is not uncritical towards itself and the people of theatre.

What does theatre give us and what does it take away from us? What does it draw us with? Is there a place for grifters? How can we draw from knowledge and experiences of our masters and  predecessors? Where does inspiration by other artists’ works finish and the „borrowing” start? What is freedom which – as one of the characters of the plays says – only theatre can give?

On Saturday, minutes before midnight, we started the meeting with the spectacle creators which was moderated by Łukasz Drewniak. The guests talked about the process of actors’ transformation thanks to which they could imersonate historical figures on the stage. They emphasized that however „The Art of Intonation” is deeply concentrated on the history of theatre, it is not a hermetical spectacle inaccessible for a broader audience.
